A Nigerian scientist claims to have found a cure for AIDS. Among his methods for testing the vaccine was injecting himself with HIV-positive blood so he could then test the vaccine on himself. The vaccine also appears to cure Hepatitis B and C and also malaria. But because of his, ahem, eccentric methods, folks are skeptical.

It’s official: space tourism has a major corporate backer. Virgin Group tycoon Richard Branson is launching Virgin Galactic with the acclaimed Space Ship One design. The first space craft will be named, of course, Enterprise. (And competition for the X Prize continues.)

Back in my ministry days I liked to tell people that god works in spite of us at least as often as he works through us. Not everyone liked hearing that, especially not those who were persuaded that they were doing the work of god on earth.
But before god can work through you, you first have to quit getting in the way. From what I can tell, god could use the help, and folks getting out of the way could lighten the load a lot. (No one likes to have to work in spite of someone.) Once you’ve learned to get out of the way, then you can learn to let god work through you. You might luck out a few times and see god work through you before you’ve learned to get out of the way. But it’s just good luck, and nothing more. God’s nice like that. The Washington Post manages to give this photo a caption that really captures the general tone the paper’s coverage of the new Native American museum: “Talking on his cell phone as he waits to enter the new museum, Jimmy Goins from North Carolina seems almost an anachronism.” As an eagle-eyed Wonkette operative commented, “Yeah, you’d think he’d be sending up smoke signals or something. It’s a wonder that Indians have figured out how to use cell phones. It seems like only yesterday they were getting the hang of rifles.” But what we really appreciate about American Indians is their deep connection to the Mother Earth, or, as they call it, “maize.”

As lunch today a co-worker who just started taking night classes in counseling cautioned us that before long she’d have a DSM-IV category for each of us. I added that I’ve heard the DSM-V is on its way but that I didn’t know what was holding it up.
Someone responded that they heard there was a conflict about the film rights. Let’s just hope it’s not a home movie.
