Juame of Noticias Unitarias Universalistas points me to a salvo by Davidson Loehr called "Why ‘Unitarian Universalism’ Is Dying." A few notes on what I find there.
1) Loehr argues that UUism is a new religion invented within our lifetimes, and that the historical predecessors we claim (Channing, Parker and Emerson) have absolutely nothing to do with UUism besides historical accident. UUism was invented, he claims, by Forrest Church and John Buehrens and is embodied in the Purposes & Principles, which function practically as a creed. He labels the P&P vacuous.
I’ve yet to see how the P&P are vacuous. I find them, together with the Living Tradition piece that usually follows, to be a helpful enough community statement of faith. If Loerh thinks he can do better, he should. Click to continue reading “Where the beef?”

Led by the bootlicking toady Dick Minim, disaffected Unitarians have banded together in a counter-jihad against the Unitarian Jihad (UJ). In its inaugural fatwa, the Unitarian Jihad Jihad (UJJ) announced its respectful intention to compassionately ban use of the following words and phrases on the grounds that they are insensitive, incontinent, and otherwise in appropriate for use by liberals of delicate dispositions, who alone can be trusted to protect these terms’ truest, fullest meanings (which are, in truth, the only meanings that should ever be attached to them at all).

In other news, the UJJ declared that all future guffaws, chortles, and snorts be pre-approved by consensus of the committee.
In response, the Unitarian Jihad respectfully issued a compassionately terse statement saying,"So what are you going to do about it?"
Observers report that the UJJ looked at the ground, shuffled its feet, and tabled further discussion, citing the need for further study and the fact that it wears glasses and needed to get home before the street lights turn on.

I always enjoy the parts of online discussions when someone quotes from a dictionary. Then you know you’re really getting down to brass tacks. To where the rubber meets the road. To the sum of the gist. To the whole enchilada.

Oh no! Wealth Bondage’s Dick Minim—his feelings hurt by John Carroll’s "Unitarian Jihad" column—outs himself as a Unitarian. Can we at least make sure he’s the last one picked for our team?
