Darth Market, meet Wealth Bondgae

animfi.gifNot too long ago I posted "Darth Market"—a little thought experiment wondering if the Market™ could serve as the bad guy in a UU sacred story.

Now methinks "Wealth Bondage" could work just as well.  (Scroll down a screen.)

What is “theology,” any way?

buddha.gifDan Harp calls for an intriguing method for doing UU theology:

If we started doing descriptive theology of Unitarian Universalism, it might get pretty interesting. It might be fun looking at UU sermons, UU pamphlets, UU songs, and so on. […]

Maybe theology should consist of a mixture of scholarship, diary, and journalism. Maybe we’d be surprised if we started doing Unitarian Universalist theology that way — maybe we’d find out that we really do have a theology that has little to do with the "seven principles" and more to do with the way we lead our lives.

But where to start?  Just thinking of hymns, what five or ten hymns would you recommend we start with?  What two or three hymns that aren’t in the hymnal would you throw in?

Richard Dawkins: Pot calls kettle black?

disgust.gifRichard "Asshat" Dawkins is at it again.   It’s been a while since I’ve bitched about him, but damn if he hasn’t got me riled up this time.

Imagine for a moment that he isn’t going off on his usual atheistic crusade.*  Even go so far as to ignore Dawkins’ facile definition of god as being a "supernatural creator," a straw man if there ever was one.

Instead, pretend that we don’t know at all what it is that Dawkins is railing about.  When we read the words "god," "atheism," "evolution,"** "natural selection" and the like, we can’t assign them any meaning.  When we read the Salon article this way, how do we find Dawkins describing his opponents, directly and indirectly?

  • ignorant
  • bigoted
  • unsophisticated
  • uneducated
  • retarded
  • primitive
  • childish
  • programmed
  • infected
  • delusional
  • unpersuadable
  • hateful
  • vengeful
  • violent
  • hostile
  • vain
  • presumptous

Indeed.  All of them down to the last are clear indications that we’re dealing with a clear-headed objective scientist here. Click to continue reading “Richard Dawkins: Pot calls kettle black?”

A plea for simple weddings

alice.gifLesson to be taken from the Duluth runaway bride-to-be?  Weddings have gotten too hard.

Hundreds of people at a sit-down reception.  Over a dozen pairs of distant cousins in the wedding party.  The social event of the season.  This is not what a wedding is supposed to be.

At this point I feel I should point out that our whole big to-do over weddings comes from mimicry of British royalty’s weddings and the multi-zillion dollar wedding industry that fans the flames.  But that’s common knowledge now and it hasn’t made a difference.

Remember the wedding scene from The GodfatherClick to continue reading “A plea for simple weddings”
