Dick points to a lot of research that he did before writing Valis.  The Black Iron Prison echos the Cave of Ignorance described by Plato in the seventh book of the Republic.  As for the Empire, the symbols of Rome are everywhere in American society, all you need is to know how to recognize them.

You may want to consider reading "Radio Free Albemuth," which follows up the Valis story with more depth.</description>
