I greeted all the UUs in mock outrage: “What kind of afternoon activity is THIS to be doing while on church retreat?” The guys all laughingly booed me and one of them jeered, “Ah, you’re just mad ’cause you’re a girl!”

I said, “Gimme your gun.” He did, laughter all around, all shooting ceased. I stepped up to the rail, aimed, and fired. Perfect bullseye. I gave the gun back and said, “What were you saying about being a GIRL?”

The looks of awe were unforgettable. I chortled as I walked away, and I don’t think there was any other thing I could have done to earn more street cred from the men in my church.

So I don’t know what kind of UUs you’re hanging around with, but many of the UUs of my acquaintance are proficient with a firearm. Including this female minister, whose Dad walked the beat as a NY cop before he became a corporate executive.

I missed every single clay pigeon and had a great time. And I saw how the sense of power could be addictive (my friend’s gun was a single-barrel 12 gauge.)

There’s some jejune about people who despise guns and gun owners without ever having used one. I still favor gun control, but I don’t want to ban guns, and nor do I want to demonize those who shoot for sport and pleasure.
