While that can tainted by the above, being able to laugh at ourselves, our situations, and those involved in our situation helps us to maintain professionalism and process frustration. I may refer to a patient as “gorked out,” and that may seem callous, but it helps me deal with the fact that they are gorked out and I will have to approach family with poor news.
